"Eau de Parfum" or "Eau de Toilette"?

A common perfume question seems to be what is the difference between "Eau de Parfum" and "Eau de Toilette". Perfume gets expensive so you want to make the right choice. The main differences between parfum and toilette are found in the concentration of the scent. Parfum is more potent than toilette. Eau de parfum lasts for a longer time than eau de toilette.

Eau de Parfum
Eau  de Parfums have 10 to 20 percent of the fragrant  extracts and oils,  while the rest consists of fillers like alcohol. These  perfumes are  more expensive because they have a higher concentration of  fragrance.  Usually Eau de Parfums are stronger and last longer than Eau de Toilettes.

Eau de Toilette
Eau  de Toilettes have five to 15 percent  of the fragrant extracts and  oils, and the rest of the mixture consists of  alcohol. Eau de toilette  is usually the least expensive perfume in a fragrance line. Since it's  weaker you may need to use more of the fragrance because the scent  may  wear off faster than Eau de Parfum.

Since they are stronger, Eau de Parfum usually costs more but in my opinion -  it's worth it. The scent lasts longer and the bottle will last you  longer as well, so in the long run I think it's the better buy. What about you?

THANK YOU for clearing this up! I've always been so confused... I'm sure that I have some of each lying around but usually use Eau de Parfum.

Okay so what Josie said. I've never known the difference and thought it was just semantics. Oops!! I, too, have both around here, but it appears that the parfum is outweighing the toilette (which btw couldn't there be a better word??)

Wow! very interesting post, eventhough I knew the eau de parfum was a better choice I wasn't quite sure why. Now I know why! I never bought eau de toilette, but it was just by chance. Anyways, Thanks!...

I explained this once to my friend when we were at a beauty counter. The sales lady about flipped out on me telling me I was wrong. We ignored her and carried on. She came back up and said "seriously why do you tell people false information does it make you feel better about yourself." To this day I absolutely refuse to go into that Saks!

I think I normally get eau de toilette- just because that's what my perfume is offered in? lol :)

Thanks for clearing this up! I've often wondered the difference and assumed it meant one was stronger because of the price difference, but was never sure. Very interesting. :)

Useful information. It is funny you post this, because San Fran is heating up and that leads to amplified perfume in the office. I long for a beautiful collection like the one here.

Spray the fragrance up into the air above you, and when the mist falls, inhale deeply and feel the first feeling this fragrance gives you.
