How To Do Your Nails at Home

My nail polish organization post got a lot of great comments and a couple of questions about doing my own nails, so I thought I'd do a post about how I do my mani/pedi's at home. It's very simple!

Having my Homedics Bubble Spa Foot Bath is probably the biggest help in doing my nails at home. It's just like being at the salon. If I don't want to use this to soak my hands, I just use the sink - it works just as well.

Trim your nails if you need to and then use a glass nail file to smooth and shape them. Glass nail files are best, and they last forever.

I buff my nails next with the Sephora 4-Step Buffer. The 4 sides are:
1. File
2. Buff
3. Polish
4. Shine
I love it and it's an easy way to make your nails look great.
I don't clip my cuticles because that's bad for them. I just remove any dead skin in the previous steps, then use a cuticle pen to condition them.

At this point you can stop if you're not painting your nails. If you are, start with a base coat. I'm using Essie's 3-way glaze right now.

Next is 2 coats of whatever polish I've picked out.

Finally I put on Sally Hansen Dry Kwik to dry my nails faster.

That's it! Very easy to do at home if you want, plus you can do your nail in the middle of the night if you decide to. Not that I'd ever do anything like that...

I have a bad go at doing my own nails. Something about now being able to move my left thumb. Oh random injuries from stupid teenage years how they ruin my adult life in the beauty department.

What is your favorite top coat/ base coat!?
I am thinking about trying the ZOYA ones because I had used their nail polish once and it lasted forever! Also, it is a natural nail polish meaning no toxic chemicals I guess :)
Great post!!

You have the nail polish organizer extraordinaire. I want to try this. I didn't know clipping your cuticles wasn't good for them...uh-oh man hands!!

Anyway, I've got that 4-step buffer and it's a gift from the heavens so maybe I just need that cuticle pen and the glaze and I'm good to go. Lord knows it keeps you from getting in the middle of a fight between the nail ladies working at the salon. oy

I am the worst about my nails. I wear nude polish, and do self manicures maybe once every two weeks. I was a chronic nail biter into my early 20s, so this is actually progress.

Great tips- I used to be terrible at doing my own nails but practice makes perfect. I always like getting pampered at the manicurist.

I really want to do my own nails at home since doing the manicure thing is so expensive to maintain. I can get through all of the first steps okay, but painting my nails is another story entirely. How do I get good at that? Thanks for this post- I'll have to try some of the products you recommend!
