What I'm Wearing...

Shirt - Forever 21, Jeans - Old Navy, Shoes - BCBG Max Azria, Earrings - Melinda Maria, Bracelet - House of Harlow, Necklace - American Eagle, Nail polish - Essie Lollipop (toes), OPI Teenage Dream and OPI Black Shatter (hands)

New set up for What I'm Wearing... posts. With the new layout, I can make the pictures bigger. I also changed how I listed everything so that takes up slightly less space. Let me know if it's working out ok.

So, this is what I wore Saturday night when we went out. Notice the heels?! Ohh the excitement. Confession  - they didn't actually make it out the door. The restaurant we were going to was included a bit of walking then we decided to go to Vulcan (which you'll see in a minute) and heels will NOT work there on a good day, so with that combination I grabbed some flats and that's what I wore most of the night. Oh well. It was a good effort, right? I also had to grab a cardigan to put on at Vulcan too, since it's outside. Wow. This outfit post is starting to feel like a lie.

A few things about Vulcan:
It's a really big statue overlooking Birmingham.
I'm obsessed with the view.
It's probably my favorite place in Birmingham. If you're ever here you should see it.
We almost got engaged here but Jared was afraid he'd drop the ring so we stayed for 5 minutes, he panicked, we left and went to a park. I was confused.

As you may have noticed, all the blog posts have labels now. Yes, I went back and added them to every post I've written. Welcome to hours and hours and hours of fun. They're at that bottom if you want to check that out. I don't know if I love how that looks, but like I said, still working on a lot of things right now.
Ok, long post, picture overload, blah, blah, blah - I'm done :)

January 30, 2011

As I've already mentioned, I'm a huge fan of the griege nail polish trend. Technically griege would be a mix of gray and beige, but if you've ever seen any of these colors you know somehow they're complex looking - in a good way, of course.
Here are the ones I have:

Chanel Particuliere

OPI You Don't Know Jacques
Sephora by OPI Metro Chic

Essie Mink Muffs

Do you own any "griege" nail polish? Which ones?

You've probably noticed the blog looks a little (a lot) different. Layout is different, more room for pictures, I'm adding tags to all the posts, and a new header is in place. That's probably not permanent, more a place holder and an idea of what I want but it'll take some time to get something that's all mine. So bear with me - if you've overhauled your blog before you understand how I'm in over my head right now! Let me know what you think so far - more changes to come.

What I'm Loving...

It's Friday! The winter blues are getting to me. Anyone else? In an effort to beat this, I'm trying to plan a vacation or 2 for the year. Definitely something for our anniversary, hopefully maybe a little weekend getaway before that. Give me websites and whatever else you use to plan a trip - any ideas of where to go are welcome, too :)
Here's what I'm loving:

Rhinestone Phone Cover
I'm not even going to defend this. It's tacky fabulous. But I'm drawn to anything shiny and sparkly, so I fear there will be more rhinestone covers in my (hopefully soon, just gotta make it to the summer) iPhone future. (I've also been on Crackberry non-stop lately and if you have a BlackBerry, you should be too. Tons of free stuff for your BlackBerry! And if you have a BB, why aren't we BBMing, hmm?)

American Idol
Do I ever put TV shows on here that aren't embarrassing? Apparently not. (My taste in TV isn't all bad, I like Mad Men. And I was addicted to Lost. And when I think of more I'll add those. Anyway.) Whatever, I like American Idol! Last season was pretty disappointing all around, so I'm hoping for better things this season. I don't really like it until they get to the Top 10 or Top 12 or whatever. Once they get to that part I can REALLY start yelling at the TV. (I judge from my living room. I'm really good.) I'm liking the judging changes so far, even though it's just auditions right now.

Chanel Riva
This is the latest Chanel polish to create a sensation. While the application of the polish is getting not so great reviews, I absolutely love the color and can't think of anything else I've seen exactly like it, but with the price combined with the negative reviews though, I'm on the search for a dupe. I think I've found one, too. I'll update soon :)

Chan Luu
I ordered a Chan Luu wrap bracelet from a Gilt sale in December (here is an invitation link if you don't have one yet) and I've been obsessed ever since it arrived. These are gorgeous! So nice and sparkly and goes with everything and I want about 3 more... Come on Gilt, have another sale!

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes are an investment and if you take care of them you can use the same ones for years. Part of doing that is cleaning them and there's 2 ways to do that - spot cleaning and deep cleaning.

To spot clean:
MAC Brush Cleanser
Spot cleaning is a quick way to get color off your brushes (usually eye brushes) during the week when you don't have the time to deep clean them. I fold a paper towel into 4ths and put a little MAC Brush Cleanser on it. That way you can keep unfolding the paper towel to clean another brush and a little of the cleanser goes a very long way. Swirl the brush around on the paper towel to remove any makeup on it. This method is very fast and the MAC Brush Cleanser dries almost immediately.

To deep clean:
Johnson's Baby Shampoo
I deep clean my brushes about once a month and do it at night so they have overnight to dry out. It's very simple, just run lukewarm water over the brush, then use baby shampoo to clean the bristles. Once the water is running clear over the brush you've gotten it clean. Lay your brushes flat to dry on a towel and be sure to wring out any water in the bristles and reshape the brush.

Doing both these things will ensure you can use your brushes for years, which is great since some of them can be pricey. It's also good for your skin. Dirty brushes can accumulate bacteria, and since you're touching your face with them, that can cause breakouts. So keep them clean! :)

What I'm Wearing...

Sweater - Lauren Ralph Lauren (mentioned here)
Jeans - Gap
Shoes - Tory Burch
Earrings - Melinda Maria
Necklace - Banana Republic (It's an elephant if you can't tell. Roll Tide.)
Ring - House of Harlow
Nail polish - Essie Mink Muffs (once again, looking horrible. Once again, was removed the night the pics were taken. This was Day 8 with that mani, though. Pretty impressive.)

Since I "found" this sweater I've become pretty obsessed with it. Ok, I've worn it twice but that's twice in a month and I can go... a really long time without re-wearing things. The first I wore it I wore it with my black booties, aka HEELS, which was pretty monumental considering how things have been for months - but happily my balance is better so hopefully more heels are in the future - I've missed them!

How To Curl Your Hair With A Flat Iron

Thank you so much for the great response on my first How-To post! Some of you had requests and I'll be posting those soon. If you have something you'd like to see, leave it in the comments!

This isn't something I've perfected by any means, but I'm working on it and I know a lot of people were curious how it's possible.

The most important part is having the right hair straightener. I've tried this in the past with no luck. The ghd is the best I've used for this purpose.

Your hair needs to have some texture to be able to hold the wave or curl. Aveda's Phomollient is great for this, but I'm thinking something I could just spray on it before I style it would be best. Any recommendations?  Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray is one I want to try, not sure if it will be good for this particular purpose though.

Grab a piece of hair like you normally would when you're straightening it, then flip the flat iron as you're pulling down. What direction and how many times you flip it controls what kind of wave or curl you put in your hair. Practice and find what works best for you. One of the easiest ways to learn how to do this is watch someone do it. Tiffany from I am Style-ish posted a video tutorial on her blog recently which you definitely need to check out if this is a style you're interested in!

Also, I was featured on Walk of Fashion yesterday so please check it out if you haven't already!

New Born

Like I said on Twitter, today's post is a little different.
Some of you know already, but I've played the piano most of my life. I'm not really sure what to say about it so I won't ramble, but if you have any questions let me know. For years now it's just been for fun, and I don't get to play often since we don't have a piano, but anyway. I recorded myself playing New Born by Muse awhile back so here you go:

And here is Muse singing it if you'd never heard it before:

It was just for fun, and I have one more I'll probably put on here in a week or so. Not a regular thing since it's not what this blog is about, but I guess I wanted to share? We'll see how it goes I guess :)

Slight Obsession

J.Crew Men's Long-sleeve broken-in slim no-pocket crewneck tee
I've gone over my love of J.Crew t-shirts but I've learned recently it extends past the women's t-shirts. Yep - I've been stealing , um I mean borrowing Jared's J.Crew t-shirts lately - and I completely love them. You know the whole Men's Style fit trend that comes back over and over again? You literally get that if you wear your husband's t-shirts. Don't worry, I'm not saying I'm going to take all of his clothes.

But he might need to get a few more J.Crew t-shirts.

What I'm Loving...

Happy Friday! Is Friday unanimously the favorite day of the week, or is that Saturday? Eh, both are pretty good if you ask me.
Here's what I'm loving:

Essie Mink Muffs
This falls into the "griege" nail polish family, which I quickly became obsessed with probably a year and a half ago. Nail polish in this color family almost always looks unflattering in the bottle, but is gorgeous when you put it on. Like I noted on TwitPic, the Mink Muffs is very close to Chanel Particuliere, which is nearly impossible to get (or it was in stores a few months ago, you can still find it online though.) Mink Muffs is $8 though and Particuliere is $25, so run out and get it if you love these colors!

Roots Only
When Roots Only offered to send me one of these, I thought why not. Having your hair colored gets pretty pricey so I try to touch it up at home, but it gets extremely messy (or maybe that's just me...). Ok, this completely solves that problem. No mess and you can apply color exactly where you want (i.e. you REALLY CAN just touch up the roots, something I've never been able to do at home). You can buy one online, and they're re-usable.

Olivia Wilde at the Golden Globes
I know there was some debate over it, but Olivia Wilde in Marchesa gets my vote for best dressed at the Golden Globes (I'm sure you care).  This dress was stunning and maybe it's the Southern Belle in me (yeah right), but I don't think it's too big at alllllll. I'd let Marchesa loan it to me whenever they wanted :)

New Magazines
My current magazine reading needed a shake-up. My subscription to Lucky ran out (which I can't decide if I'm missing or not), and when Glamour and Marie Claire run out I don't think I'm subscribing to them anymore. That leaves InStyle and Allure (love both of them), but I need to add some more to the mix. So far I've added Vogue, Elle and Vanity Fair (I ended up getting Vogue and a lot of times Elle anyway) and I'm pretty sure I want to add Harper's Bazaar, too. Thoughts? Any others I'm missing? And yes, I read them all!

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

How To Apply Bronzer

Bronzer can get tricky. Done right you have a gorgeous glow but done wrong, uh, you look orange. Not good. It's actually really simple - you just need the right bronzer and the right tool to apply it.

NARS Laguna Bronzer

NARS Laguna gets my vote for most universally flattering, but use whatever works best for you. When you're applying it, go light and hit the "high points" of your face (cheekbones, temples, bridge of your nose, etc), basically anywhere the sun would hit your skin. If you do end up with too much use  a little loose powder to blend it out.

MAC 150 Large Powder Brush

Next is using the right brush to apply it. The bigger, the better. A smaller brush is going to give you too much product and it won't look natural. A big, fluffy brush allows a lighter and more natural application. The MAC 150 is a great choice. Sonia Kashuk makes a large powder brush as well if you're looking for a better price.
What's your favorite bronzer? I know in my Benefit Boxed Powders post a lot of people mentioned Hoola.

I have a few idea for other How-To posts I want to do, but if you have any ideas please leave them in a comment!

House of Harlow 1960 Oval Finger Ring

I'm not going to say again how much I love House of Harlow - it's just redundant at this point. So I'll say this - there were some new pieces on Shopbop and I have my credit card number memorized. (That's not true. Close to true, but not true. Anyway.)
Here's what I got:
Oval Finger Ring in Silver at Shopbop $35

$35! Not bad, right? That's one of the many things I love about House of Harlow. In each collection there's always plenty of items in the under $50 range. Affordable and really excellent quality for the price.

What other House of Harlow pieces need to be on my list right now?

What I'm Wearing...

Dress* - Express
Shirt - GAP
Leggings - Express
Boots - BCBGeneration
Purse - Michael Kors Astor
Earrings - Melinda Maria
Bracelet - House of Harlow
Ring - Express
Nail polish - Butter London in Muggins (nails look horrible, the polish came off that night)

Ok, Express called this a "dress". I say that's debatable. I mean, everything is covered but I wouldn't dare have left the house without the leggings. Having (almost to the knee, even though they're supposed to be OTK) boots helped balance it out, too.
Whatever. Consider this my first fashion risk of 2011.
This outfit combination was brought to you by the help of my Twitter friends. Thanks, girls! :) See, now Twitter helps me get dressed. Very useful.

January 17, 2011

If you follow me on Twitter you saw all my Tweets about Snowpocalypse. I won't go into it again, but in our area of Alabama we got about 4 inches of snow/ice which I KNOW is laughable to most of you but this is the South so we freaked out and shut the state down.
And there was no milk and bread at the stores. (That really happens.)
Anyway, I took a few pics and made a few videos with my camera. Nothing exciting, mostly us trying to get the dog to venture on the ice.
I put it all together in iMovie and here it is:

I used "Winter Song" that I posted last week in the background but YouTube makes it clear they'll yank your video if you post something you don't have the rights to, or at least not show it in certain places. So if you can't see it because of the music, I uploaded it without:

I have 2 more movies I've made in iMovie of me playing the piano. Maybe I'll post those, too? We shall see.
If for some reason you still can't watch that, here are the pics:

August is wearing his L.L. Bean jacket. :)
