Closet Clean Out

weheartit

Yeah, I WISH my closet looked like that.
I'll admit, I'm very lucky to have a good sized walk-in closet in our bedroom but it needs some work. I keep most of my stuff in that closet and the dresser in our bedroom but everything won't fit in there, so I have a chest of drawers in the guest bedroom with sweaters and stuff. That's fine I guess - except I completely forget about everything in there. Imagine my horror a few weeks ago when I went to pick out a sweater and not only were there about 10 with the tags still on, one was 100% cashmere and I'd never worn it. Yeah. I was irritated. There's no reason for things to be unworn like that. Especially cashmere.
Anyway, the point is I think the master closet is going to get some work in 2011. While the size is good, the storage is not. It just has the standard wire racks and shelves that come with new houses. Nothing for shoes, nothing for bags, nowhere to fold and put things. So, I hope to work on that. As soon as I figure out how. And how much it will cost. And convince Jared to do the work on it. This will all be easy, I'm sure...

Suggestions are welcome!

My friends made their spare room their walk in closet. They have one section with two levels of rails (shirts on top, trousers on bottom), one section with taller rail on top (for longer coats) and pop out shallow drawers on top of deeper drawers (ties and accessories on top, underpants and socks out of sight on the bottom) and a third section dedicated to shoes (with a shelf on top to store their manbags). I hang out in there A LOT! I believe they got all the organizers at Ikea but it looks like a million bucks. Good luck with your redesign. Post pics when it's finished! Would love to see how it turns out!

I do a yearly cleanout & store seasonal clothes. I put the new clothes in a section so I'll be reminded of them instead of getting lost in the mix. And I never buy anything unless I can wear 3 different ways.

You'll have to post before and after photos. My game plan today is 1. put Christmas stuff away and 2. start going through my closet and pull out everything I don't wear very often. I'm a little nervous to see what I've been neglecting!

I love organizing so I can't wait to see your posts!!

I think if you literally go through everything you have an do a girls night of closet cleaning it's the best way to go. Try on pieces, keep your favorites, get rid of the old, torn, out of style, doesn't fit pieces. Have your girls over, drink a glass of wine and have fun with it!

Cheers.

I have two shelves with racks between and I could not live without them. I have also put in a center rack that goes from ceiling to floor for my bags. I think the trick is making sure the shelves are reachable so you use them for clothing rather than photo books or games.

Yikes! What horror! Your poor unworn clothes! Poppytalk had a cute article on "getting organized" just yesterday... It may not be what you want for organizing cashmere sweaters, but it might help with smaller items :)

I was lucky to have a husband who just knew to give me the walk in closet all to myself. However, between us I'm having problems closing the door because it's getting filled. I was just thinking that I'd like to re-organize my closet. Please share any tips if you get any.

I love a good organized closet, I love organizing them (yeah, I'm a dork like that)! My first piece of advice is to pull everything out and edit. Be honest with yourself if you will wear an item and if you love it. I just sent a bag of stuff to the consignment shop this past week. Good luck and take before and after photos!!!

It's so funny that I would never ever wish for another house...just a bigger closet. Right now, mine expands to the room next to mine (guest room closet). My parents are probably going to will me to part ways with some of my clothing during our garage sale this summer. Eek. Definitely check out, ikea, though. I just got an email with the title "organizational savings". Go get 'em, girl.

I also long to have one like that. It is truly a dream for women to have a very organized and spacious walk-in closet. The thing is that I have difficulty in organizing things. Sorting out is not my expertise. lol! But I also dream having one just like that. I guess, to have an organize closet is needed to have tons of patience to sort, classify, and categorize clutter.

Ah, such a great idea! I should follow suit.
