Hair Straighteners

GHD from Sephora
Pictured above is one of my Christmas gifts this year - a GHD hair straightener. Now if you've ever seen the price of a GHD (I think they start at about $165) your first thought is probably "You're out of your mind for paying that much". I used to think that too, so I figured I'd do a little explaining.
I started using a flat iron my freshman year of college. I kept borrowing a friend's then got one for my birthday in the spring, so that would be 2002. Anyway, for years I can't count how many I went through, I think at least 4. I would get them at the drugstore or Sally's, pay around $30 or $40 and within a year they'd be in the trash. Not working, couldn't be fixed, useless. Well, that's a waste if you ask me.
CHI from Folica.com
In 2007 I got a CHI from Folica.com. I think I got mine for $95, you can get the same one today for $99.99 at that link. So yeah, a lot more than I was used to paying but you know what? Still working at 3.5 years and counting. Definitely worth the extra money! So why did I switch to GHD? The GHD is better at not just straightening but waving and curling your hair as well.

I'm not saying run out and buy either of these (I do recommend both, though), I'm saying I've been straightening my hair almost daily for years so for me it's turned out to be a much better investment to spend the extra money. For you it might not be a flat iron, but it's a principle I promise you can apply.
Thoughts?

Ah the GHD is so pretty! I have the Chi and really like it--but I definitely don't straighten my hair everyday-- and I feel like anytime I straighten my hair, my waves will come back so quickly--any advice!? Products maybe?? Or maybe it is the Chi--idk. But I hope you love this one and definitely think it is a GREAT investment :)

I admit it... I buy the cheapies. Should I invest in a nice one, I'm sure that I'd find a way to break it -- at least I don't feel bad about mine falling apart every few years...

well...I dn't use it often enough to spend too much money on it but I surely would if I had to use it everyday or so!

I'm totally with you. Invest in quality because the functionality means better value at the end! I don't straighten my hair but appreciate the recommendation (very cool that it curls too!)

I have insanely straight hair so never need a flat iron, but I use a mini criper on my roots for volume and have to agree with electrical appliences the more expensive ones do last the longest!

If I needed a straightener I would probably go with the more expensive ones so they would last longer, hehe...but I don't have to worry about it (yet....who knows what my hair will do next...)

I found my beloved straighter (a Solia) on Folica.com, only to realize that the warehouse was just minutes from my parents' house! And after I blew it out about a year later, they generously replaced it for free!

I've heard very good things about GHD, and I'll probably make the switch if and when my Solia every bites the dust again!

I've always wanted to learn how to curl my hair with a flat iron. I don't own a flat iron though, so that's part of my problem. Haha.

I am totally with you, when you spend more, it works better, hence you destroy your hair much less!

i have a chi flat iron! i don't use it much anymore because i have shorter hair and don't really need it, but my chi was very good to me for many years :)

mmmkay. i have the HAI, but have been eye'ing the GHD and waiting for the money fairies to drop some loot my way. thx for mentioning!!

what happened to the days when it was a good thing to lose your tooth because it meant money was on the way?? if i lost one now i'd go into hiding and have to spend a grip for a falsey that did not produce a ghd in any way, shape or form.

so often it's true - you get what you pay for! and when it comes to something you use everyday, it makes sense.

i don't straighten but a few times a month (um, hello seattle, rain much?), but i wouldn't fault anyone who uses one daily to invest in a good quality one.

i'm using this same freakin' rationale when we finally break down and buy a new mattress. no more cheep stuff thank you! :P

I have ziltch skill when it come to a flat iron so I'm hesitant to spend mega bucks on one but the cheapie ones I've hard aren't improving my ablities! I'm so darn comfortable with my curling iron but I keep hearing that flat irons make the best wave?? I need a lesson!

p.s. come give your fashion maven input on open toe shoes with hose/tights!

I agree, GHD is amazing! My mom bought me one during my freshman year of high school and it still works perfectly 6 years later!

@Ashleigh They do make amazing waves, but I've completely lost my skill(z) in that department, so I went out to Ulta on Black Friday and bought a curling iron. Conair- it gets the job done and lasts all day.

I have an old CHI...it's still hanging on, but I'd love a new one.

I loveeeee my Sedu flat iron...I've used Chi and the Sedu is the only one that works.

I totally understand your purchase of the GHD's. They are the one investment that's repaid me (with straight, frizz-free hair) over and over. I love them! Hope you'll be happy with yours too!

I agree - curly her, love it straight...I just told myself price per use price per use, that how i always barter for expensive stuff, i know i will wear/use it way more that a one hit wonder! LOL

I have a Croc... I got the salon version, and it was almost $300. I absolutely love it though and am so glad that I got it. I definitely think you get what you pay for.

I have a Chi from folica and i love that baby. It works wonders on my curly hair and keeps me looking sharp by extending the life of blow outs i occasionally receive from the hair stylist.

I have and LOVE the GHD from folica. I just learned how to use it to curl my hair...although I don't have that mastered yet.

Totally agree with you. I bought one of the cheapies in college, but found that it was pulling strands of my hair out - ouch! So I invested in a CHI and LOVE it - have had it for about 6 or 7 years, with no problems whatsoever!

Punctuation Mark said...

i need one of these but keep on hesitating about buying one... maybe i should check these out!

Audrey Allure said...

I have CHI one, and I love it! :)

I'm with ya! All through college I always had the cheapo ones as well and went through a ton- everyone had those huge, white revlon ones haha. Now my $120 one is going on 3 years, I adore it. I want to get a ghd one, they are amazing, but not until this one breaks (and now it probably will tomorrrow since I just jinxed it!)

Krystal said...

i think chi has run its course, it gets bad reviews now! i bought another brand that is similar but it's the one i leave in the US so can't even think of the name!

Jan said...

It's pricey but it's worth the money and you'll just spend it once. Go for the GHD :)

Stacey said...

So i was using my flat iron this morning and realized that it's a Sedu and not a Chi like i said earlier(guess i felt like i had to correct my post:-)).
