Thank you so much for the great response on my first How-To post! Some of you had requests and I'll be posting those soon. If you have something you'd like to see, leave it in the comments!
This isn't something I've perfected by any means, but I'm working on it and I know a lot of people were curious how it's possible.
The most important part is having the right hair straightener. I've tried this in the past with no luck. The ghd is the best I've used for this purpose.
Your hair needs to have some texture to be able to hold the wave or curl. Aveda's Phomollient is great for this, but I'm thinking something I could just spray on it before I style it would be best. Any recommendations? Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray is one I want to try, not sure if it will be good for this particular purpose though.
Grab a piece of hair like you normally would when you're straightening it, then flip the flat iron as you're pulling down. What direction and how many times you flip it controls what kind of wave or curl you put in your hair. Practice and find what works best for you. One of the easiest ways to learn how to do this is watch someone do it. Tiffany from I am Style-ish posted a video tutorial on her blog recently which you definitely need to check out if this is a style you're interested in!

Just read your feature on Walk of Fashion. I also love old Hollywood glamour! I was just telling my hubby that when I'm ready for short hair again, I want to wear it like old Hollywood starlets. Big barrel curls, pin curls, my natural curls which will be curlier when short, whatever. I should get a flatiron to curl my hair. The idea makes me laugh, but it works.
I need to watch your video when I won't wake the household. I guess I could go get my headphones, but that would require getting out of bed. Plus, I want to share with my boys. We like Muse.

great tutorial! i've been meaning to learn how to do this for a while!
As I don't have a long hair and not a woman.. I will definitely pass this to my best friend.
She keeps screaming on the phone asking me hair question.. and I don't know.. I am photographer not a hair dresser. hahah

I have straight hair, so knowing how to curl it properly would be great. My hair stylist recommended using a straighter too, which is why I bought the ghd.
Very cool tutorial....Chloe does this all the time...me, never works out too well, lol
Stop by and say Hello:)

♥ Bit of hairspray sprayed lightly over your hair if your hair is fine is usually the best way :) Although it doesn't protect your hair :) It's the only way my hair holds in curls :) xxxx

Ooh fun!! I'm too scared to try it though...I hate straighteners, I'm always afraid to burn myself...haha

Love this. I use to do this to my hair all the time. But haven't in forever.

Bumble & bumble tonic lotion is great prep for styling (used to do some random hair modeling for them!)
Congrats on the Walk of Fashion feature - how cool that you can play piano by ear!
Oh I just loved your feature yesterday :) And I'm so pathetic when it comes to curling my own hair...it's a shame because I love how it looks when done right. Practice makes perfect I guess :)
I love a tutorial! More please
I have been looking for a new straightener, not that I don't like my chi but it's not as good for curling! Thanks for all the wonderful tips! xo
im going to have to try this out

I'm in love with my ghd - had it for years and never fials!! x
I think this is something I need to perfect asap! Although I'm convinced everyone else is using a magic straightner lol.
any suggestions on getting stick straight hair to STAY curled? even if i put hairspray, my hair goes flat:(
A terrific how-to, although I'm not sure I could pull it off. I feel silly with that sexy, wavy hair!
oh i soo appreciate you sharing this! i have tried to curl with a straightener, & it turns out ok, but never the ooh-la-la ive seen others do! so im stoked to see a tutorial and get some tips.
ps i love "greige" too! great color lol and i so appreciate all of your advice, you are like tripadvisor for fashion & beauty :)

P.S. Congrats on your feature ~ saw it and commented yesterday :)
I've been dying to learn how to do this. I don't actually have a flat iron though, so I'll need to get one. Thanks for the tips, I'm going to check out the video now!

I have natural curly-wavy hair~
Congrats on the Walk of Fashion feature-YAY!
I've never tried this -- I think my flat iron is too thick but I'm definitely intrigued! I love the look. Off to check out your feature -- congratulations!

My sister has this down to an art but I still can't seem to get it right! One day ;-)
Happy Tuesday Darling! xo
Great tips! I'll definitely have to try this out because I always have trouble curling my hair!
When my hair was shorter I did this all the time! It really makes some good looks :)
I seriously need to invest in a good straightener, I don't know why I'm so hesitant to spend money on something I'd use nearly every day!
i've tried this. it doesn't work..or i'm not doing it right! :/
I got my hairdresser to show me and I still couldn't do it on my own. So I do random curls with a large curling iron if I need some curls
Oooh tutorial! Love it! Thanks for sharing...
I have been trying to figure this out forever! I think I don't have the right flat iron...
xoxo Maria
Congrats on your feature over at Walk of Fashion! Love the MUSE by the way... I need to grow my hair out so I can start curling it again. But living in Houston the second I walk outside (even with hairspray) my hair goes FLAT!
I never knew you could do this! Thanks for the tips :))

I love this look, my hairdresser did it on me last time I got my hair done and I loved it!
Great tips!
great post and thanks for linking to my tutorial! I think the surf spray would probably be good to give you the texture needed before curling.
I have been doing this a lot lately and my sister got me hooked on it. We are going to do a post on it sometime in Feb :)
checking out your guest post :)
I really needed this post.. thanks!
p.s. I'm really curious about Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray too
