What I'm Wearing...

Dresses - Tucker for Target and Old Navy, Tights - Simply Vera, Shoes - Tory Burch, Necklace - Gifted, Ring - House of Harlow, Nail polish - OPI Glitzerland and Sparkle-icious

As soon as I got my hands on the Tucker dress, I wanted to wear it over another dress. (Hmm, I wonder where I got that idea?) It could be better, but I still love the idea and can't wait to figure out more ways to wear the dress.
If you follow me on Twitter, you've probably seen the drama play out throughout the day. Last night in the middle of the night, we were having a bad storm and lightning struck our house/living room/who knows. We were gone for a lot of the day, but since we've been home and Jared has been looking at it, the satellite, Wii, receiver, and TV in the living room all seem to be damaged or dead. We have home owner's insurance, and some things like the TV are under warranty, so tomorrow we'll have to make a lot of phone calls and try to map out the best way to handle everything. Because that hasn't been frustrating enough, now my BlackBerry has crashed so Jared's up trying to fix that (again. This has happened before but my contract isn't up with AT&T, so it's fix it or pay out of pocket to replace it without an upgrade.)
For all my whining and complaining I really am grateful that we're fine, the dog is fine, and the house is fine. But for the love, this has made for a frustrating day and I think there are a couple more of those in the future.
Is the saying that March comes in like a lion and goes out by giving you a massive breakdown and anxiety attack? Because that seems about right.

What I'm Loving...

It took about half a day of hot weather and I was ready for the pool to be open and a beach trip to be planned.
Is the pool open yet?
No.
Beach trip?
Nada.
Well now it's rainy and the cold is back, so I want the warm weather and the beach trip.
Something needs to be done about this.
Here's what I'm loving:

Lisa Scinta - I Need A Doctor
I'm sure you've heard the original version of this song by Eminem. How Lisa Scinta managed to remake it is completely amazing. Putting a melody to a rap? And it works? Pretty genius.

OPI - Cajun Shrimp
This has been one of my go-to mani/pedi colors for the spring and summer for several years now. I always end up reaching for it as soon as the temperature warms up and it never disappoints. It's good for all skin tones and I'm pretty convinced it just puts you in a better mood.

Lauren Conrad Braid
I guess technically this would be called a side french braid or something, but I bet at least some of you automatically knew which hairstyle I was talking about just from that name. Maybe? I wasn't the only one watching The Hills, was I? Whatever. I am not good at getting my hair to do anything so trust me, I was skeptical I could do this to my hair. Then I saw this tutorial:
Um, it's really easy. Like I did it on the first try easy. Trust me, anyone can do this. I'm pretty sure I've found my new pool/beach/lake hairstyle.
(Seriously. Someone needs to plan a vacation. Mentally I'm already there.)

Birthday Month
weheartit
With my birthday on the 11th and my sister's birthday on the 20th, March became known as Birthday Month when I was growing up. It still is. Abby lives in Florida, but she was home this past weekend so we celebrated her birthday - a little late, but we celebrated all the same. Growing up we refused to share our birthdays and each insisted on a friend party, a family party, and I think my Mom usually brought something to school on our actual birthdays. That's 3 birthdays a piece. All in March.
Birthday. Month.

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

How To Apply Cream Blush

Monday night rolled around and while I had a good day, I hadn't gotten enough accomplished on my to-do list. What does that mean? In my case, laundry and Shredding in the middle of the night. Slightly crazy? Probably. But I'm determined to get the week off on the right foot. Thanks to my #shredcrew for some needed motivation!

Like bronzer, cream blush can be tricky. It took me awhile to figure it out and again, it comes down to the products and using the right tool to apply it.

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge For Lips And Cheeks
Stila Convertible Color
These are my 2 favorite cream blush brands and bonus - you can use both on your lips, too. Cream blush can look so bright (read: scary) in the container, and yet almost every shade is universally flattering. Applied right they go on very light, very sheer, and are very wearable.

MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush

In my opinion, you need to apply cream blush with a brush. Some people use their fingers but I can't get that to work. I use a brush, and it's always this one. Just tap it in the product and apply it along the cheekbones and you're done. So easy and it lasts all day - so perfect in the summer when it's burning up.

Do you use cream blush? What's your favorite?

The Shred Crew

via weheartit (I wish...)
Ok, I've already mentioned it, and you've probably seen it elsewhere, but quite a few people are on board for the Shred Crew. It's very simple if you want to jump in. Most of us are doing 30 Day Shred, but if you're doing something else that's fine of course.
Here's the list of who's in:
Carrie - This Free Bird
Taylor - Curly in the City
Kristin - Skinny Jeans & a Chai Latte
Torrie - A Place to Share
Kayla - Ramblings of a Small Town Girl
Danielle - Elleinadspir
J - Oh Hey It's J
Shan - Merci Blah Blah
Erin - Pursuit of LLT
Angela - Notes from the Dressing Room
Kristin - Bon Bon Rose Girls
Micah -Unabashedly Me
Meghan - Little Girl in the Big World
...and me, of course.
Follow our blogs (listed above), follow on Twitter, and be sure to use the #shredcrew if you Tweet about it so everyone sees it!
I've been at this a week now, so I'll probably be doing a little update here and there to hold myself accountable and see if I am making any progress. Like most everything else this year, I'm easing into a better eating and exercising plan and trying to figure out something that will help and that I can really stick to and maintain. So it's ongoing - nothing is ever easy, right?
If you're trying out a new diet and exercise plan, or if you've been at one for awhile, I'd love to hear about it or any tips and tricks you'd like to share! Most everyone is trying to something this time of year so I'm sure we'd all like to hear success stories.

Aquamarine

images via weheartit

Aquamarine ("water of the sea") is March's birthstone. I absolutely love it. I think it's gorgeous and I love that it has a connection to water.
We're closing out Birthday Month around here. My sister flew in to town yesterday and we're celebrating her birthday today with my family. Once again, it's been a good birthday month and I think I've sufficiently convinced quite a few people that March is a pretty amazing month. You should definitely love it.
What's your birthstone? Do you like it?

Friend Friday - Girl Power

Friend Friday
I recently joined the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday group created by Katy over at Modly ChicEvery week Katy puts together a set of questions and on Friday if you want to participate, you answer them on your blog and link back up at Modly Chic.

weheartit
1. Do you think there is an incompatibility between feminism and a love for fashion?
Not at all. Feminism is believing in equal rights for women and I see absolutely no reason why that is incompatible with a love for fashion.
2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion, how do you incorporate every aspect of yourself into your blog?
It's not always intentional, but the rest of my life usually pops up in the blog somehow. Dogs in my outfit pics, stories about Jared - most of it finds it's way in one way or another.
3. With the fashion industry still being a male-dominated profession, how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?
Almost every woman I know laments the fact that they can't go into many stores and find clothes that suit their particular body type. It seems to be an across the board issue for almost all women and body types because so many stores and brands seem to have not taken  the fact that women are not a uniform size and shape into consideration. I think if more women were in all different areas of the fashion industry - from design, to marketing, to getting things to a mass-retail level, that would change to some extent.
4. How is your self-image and the way you carry yourself informed by your beliefs?
My self-image comes from how I feel about myself. Anything else just complicates that.
5. Do you think clothing/makeup/hair helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?
I think it's part of who I am so it definitely helps to communicate myself.

If you're interested in FBFF, go to Modly Chic for more information then e-mail Katy if you want to join the group.

L'Oreal Mascaras

Ok, most of you probably know, but several of us started the 30 Day Shred this week. Carrie's blog has a list of everyone who is doing it so far. Nothing formal about it, just join in, follow along on our blogs, and on TwitterTwitter seems to be where most of the daily conversation is, so join in! I need more people to whine to. I mean for encouragement. (I mean to whine to.)
Moving on.
L'Oreal is one of the best drug store brands and I especially like their mascara. I've tried a few of them and figured I'd do a quick review:

Voluminous
"Voluminous Original Volume Building Mascara is uniquely formulated to build lashes to 5x their natural thickness, for a full and dramatic lash look. The Volume Maximizing Brush thickens lashes evenly and smoothly, leaving them soft with virtually no flakes, smudges, or clumps."

  • Ophthamologist-tested and allergy-tested
  • Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers
  • Clump-resistant
  • Fragrance-free
This has been one of my drugstore staples for years. It is a great volume building mascara and it doesn't clump. In recent years a lot of brands have gone away from the tradition mascara wand to the rubbery, nylon bristles which helps to separate lashes even more. L'Oreal caught on to this and that seems to be the main difference with the new Million Lashes mascara, which is next on my list to try. I'm anxious to see if they improved on an already great mascara.

Telescopic
"Telescopic Original Mascara enhances your lashes with intense length and unique lash by lash separation. The flat side of the patented flexible Precision Brush lengthens lashes up to 60%, while the comb side of the brush precisely separates lashes for a clump-free result."
  • Ophthamologist-tested and allergy-tested
  • Removes easily with soap and water
  • Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers
  • Fragrance free
The best lengthening mascara I've found in the drugstore so far. I was very surprised the first time I used this as I hadn't seen a ton of reviews on it, but I love it and have bought it repeatedly. Amazing if you pair it with a volumizing mascara.

Telescopic Explosion
"Want lush out-to-there lashes? Telescopic Explosion Mascara reaches 100% of lashes from every angle for a dramatic, fanned out effect. The unique spherical brush lengthens, separates, and adds volume to even tiny corner and lower lashes, transforming your look from everyday to explosive with a few sweeps. The smooth formula wears all day without smudging or flaking."

This was clearly supposed to replicate what Givenchy was going for with Phenomen'Eyes. Nothing about this impresses me. It doesn't do what it claims and you can find something better. It's a skip.

Something else I always like about L'Oreal mascaras - in addition to your usual Black, and Blackest Black colors, L'Oreal has Carbon Black for all their mascaras. I usually pick that because it seems to give a slightly glossier look, something I like in mascaras. Overall, L'Oreal has the best range and selection of drugstore mascaras, in my opinion.
Do you use any of them?

What I'm Loving...

I think we skipped spring and went straight to summer. That's what usually happens around here. Spring, fall - these seasons don't mean much in the South. I hear they're nice, though.
Here's what I'm loving:

The O.C.: Complete Series
TV shows on DVD are one of the greatest things in life. I don't know why, but they just are. No commercials, special features - yeah, good stuff. Lately I've been watching OC DVDs (the complete series) and I'm loving it. Only problem is it's making me want to get all the music mixes on iTunes - and there's 6 of them. Gah.

Butter London No More Waity, Katie

I wanted this color as soon as Butter started promoting it, months ago. I'm not sure when the actual release date was, but I noticed it on the website a couple of weeks ago and snatched it up. Hello! It's a nail polish with my name in it. I felt obligated. Plus it's a gorgeous, sparkly purple color. Named after a princess. With my name. Ok, she's not a princess yet but she almost is...

Ruby
I don't remember why I started watching Ruby (probably a marathon. If I watch a TV show it's a safe bet I got sucked into a marathon at one point or another, but anyway...) but now I have to keep watching to see how much weight she loses. You can't help but root for her!

Florence + the Machine - Falling

Because falling's not the problem
When I'm falling I'm in peace
It's only when I hit the ground
It causes all the grief

Hey, remember how I was obsessed with pretty much every song on Florence +the Machine's "Lungs" album? Good news, now "Lungs - The B Sides" has been released. Yeah. It's just as awesome.

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

How To Fix Jewelry

I had to break for 30x30, but the How-To posts are back! If there's something you want to see, leave a comment and let me know.
Over the years I've had to repair quite a few pieces of costume jewelry so I thought I'd put together a post of the most common issues I've had and some tips and tricks for handling them. This is for inexpensive, costume jewelry. If you ever have a problem with fine jewelry, I'd recommend taking it back to the jeweler you purchased it from!

Loose Stones
Anytime you but something with rhinestones, you run the risk of them falling out. I bought this ring while we were out of town and I think 2 of the stones fell out before we got back home. All you need to do is put a coat of clear fingernail polish on top of the stones to hold them in place and you won't lose any. (Pretty sure I got this tip from A.Co est. 1984!)

Broken or Missing Stones
If you can fix a piece of jewelry by gluing the stone or piece back on, do that with some Krazy Glue. Sometimes you can't, or you lost it. In that case, especially with earrings, "break" the other one so they'll match again. See the 2 stones at the top of this pair of earrings? There was a 3rd above them. One fell out and I couldn't find it, so I just took the other one off so they'd match again.

Broken Links
This has probably been my most common jewelry problem. The link holding that elephant pendant on? The original one was cracked.
The 2nd chain on this long necklace? It broke off and was just hanging. Luckily this type of thing is extremely easy to fix.
Michael's, or any craft store, has packs of links and jump rings and they're really cheap. Find whatever is the closest match to the jewelry you're trying to fix.

What are the most common jewelry problems you've had? If you have any tips and tricks to share, leave them in a comment so everyone can see!

Shopbop Gift Card - Ray-Ban

You knew I couldn't just get one thing from Shopbop, right?

I also got a pair of Ray-Ban Original Aviator Sunglasses in gold. I've wanted a pair of Ray-Ban's for a long time and a gift card was the perfect excuse to finally get them!

Happy Birthday Abby!

You thought the birthday posts were over, didn't you?
You were so wrong.
Today is my sister's birthday!
The day Abby was born. I guess I had been told you needed to be quiet around babies (I don't think that lasted).
Reading to Abby
Abby doesn't look too happy. Actually neither do I.
Ok, once again she doesn't look thrilled. I swear I was usually nice to her.
We had A LOT of matching/coordinating outfits even though we're 3 years apart.

 Happy Birthday, Abby!
(I have pictures from her 21st birthday, but I'm feeling nice today. Must be that sisterly love.)

For Japan With Love

Tomorrow I am participating in For Japan With Love.
Please go to the site for more information as well as links to donate.
I hope that Japan can feel our love and support and that we can all take a moment to remember what we really value in our own lives.

Shopbop Giftcard - House of Harlow

The first thing I got with my Shopbop gift card will come as no surprise:

It's the House of Harlow Sunburst Cocktail Ring. It comes in several colors but the cream one has been on my list for awhile now. I was so excited to get it and completely love it, like I do all my House of Harlow pieces :)

What I'm Loving...

I think it's definitely time to start planning the vacation(s) we want to take this year. Nothing like seeing Spring Break everywhere to push you towards booking a trip.
Here's what I'm loving:

Melinda Maria Moon & Star Necklace
One of my gifts from my parents was this gorgeous rose gold moon & star necklace by Melinda Maria. You know I love rose gold, so pair that with my love of celestial things and this is pretty much perfect. And the double chain connecting the moon and star? Yeah. Pretty much obsessed with this.

Make Up For Ever Lab Shine Lip Gloss
I've never had a lip gloss from the Make Up For Ever line and getting one of the Lab Shines was a perfect choice. There are several different kinds, but I picked up D12 which is from the Diamond Collection.
Glitter, light pink gloss? Yes, please.

Birthday Cards
Cards from my in-laws and parents. So fitting. on Twitpic
I love getting cards, especially cards that are perfect for you. A card with purses all over it and another with a girl covered in jewelry? Perfect for me.

Birthday Gifts
#vivalabirthdayweekend on Twitpic
Not the gifts other people give you (although those are great, see the Melinda Maria necklace above), but the gifts stores give you for your birthday. What? Stores give you stuff? Well - pretty much. Sephora gives a gift to Beauty Insiders (6 oz Philosophy 3 in 1 this year), Express sends a $15 gift certificate, and Victoria's Secret sends $10 cards to Angel members. There's plenty more, and you should check them out at stores you regularly shop at, but these are the stores I hit up over the weekend.

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

What I'm Wearing...

Shirt - Express, Cardigan - Express, Jeans - Old Navy, Shoes - Tory Burch, Earrings - Target, Bracelet - House of Harlow, Ring - Vintage, Nail Polish - OPI I Vant To Be A-Lone Star
This is what I wore Saturday night, or Day 2 of Viva La Birthday Weekend. Whatever you want to call it. If you missed the picture on Twitter, then this is the first time you've seen the new hair cut and color. Nothing drastic, but I got a few inches cut off and some caramel hi-lites put in. A little bit lighter for the spring, you know. Except you probably can't tell. But I promise it is.

If you've missed it, here's some stuff I posted on Twitter from Viva La Birthday Weekend (click on them to make them bigger):
Chocolate, fudge icing, strawberries inside! on Twitpic
