What I'm Wearing...

Shirt - Express, Jeans - Old Navy, Shoes - Tory Burch, Belt - Limited, Sunglasses - Chanel, Earrings - Express, Bracelet - House of Harlow
I'm pretty sure this is a first on the blog. I wore this outfit, uploaded the pictures the next day, hated every single one, put the outfit back on and took the pictures again. I can think of one other time that I uploaded the pictures, the outfit just looked wrong, so I scrapped it and never posted it. But I don't think I've ever taken the pictures again. I'm typically far too lazy to go to that kind of effort. This time I had hit a trifecta of frustration - I was mad at the shirt (2nd time I've tried this and I still didn't love it), the camera (it's a point and shoot but it's supposed to auto-focus - why are so many of the pictures blurry?!) and Jared (seeing as he took the pictures, I hold him responsible). I'm still frustrated with the shirt. I'd like a nicer camera at some point. I didn't change the locks the next day when Jared went to work.
I wore this on May 21 which was 1) 7 years that Jared and I have been together 2) the day the world was supposedly ending.  I don't really acknowledge the "dating" anniversary now that we're married but like I said on Twitter a lot of people acted like the world was ending when we started dating so I found it pretty amusing the apocalypse was supposed to come on that day.
I'm pretty sure I have a warped sense of humor. Oh well.

Happy Memorial Day!

Happy Memorial Day! This Memorial Day weekend is a little different than in years past. My sister is moving to Nashville so we spent the first part of the weekend helping her find an apartment. She's been in Jacksonville, FL the past 3 years so she's getting closer to Alabama :) I'm happy it's summertime now - I'm ready to sit around the pool!
How are you spending Memorial Day weekend?

Friend Friday - Hair Care

Friend Friday
The Fashion Beauty Friend Friday group was created by Katy over at Modly ChicEvery week Katy puts together a set of questions and on Friday if you want to participate, you answer them on your blog and link back up at Modly Chic
1. How often do you get your hair cut?
Usually when Charli (my stylist/one of my BFFs) texts me and says "When are you going to make a hair appointment?"
2. Do you go to the same stylist each time, try someone new, go to the
cheap hair cutting chains or live it up in a salon?
My hair stylist is one of my best friends, so I always go to her. She works at a local salon.
3. Do you color your hair? How often? What’s your natural color?
Yes. It depends. I haven't seen it since I was 16 or 17. Does that answer any of that?
4. The one thing you always do to keep your hair looking great is:
Be lazy with it. Seriously, washing and drying and using heat on your hair daily will likely damage it. I'm perfectly happy to skip days washing it and use my dry shampoo, go to sleep with wet hair so I don't have to blow dry it, and use my flat iron for touch ups, not daily use. The laziness = not using excessive heat daily which = my hair isn't damaged. Works for me :)
5. What hair trend do you love and wish you could rock?
Feather extensions. I want them. I think I need them. I wonder how much Charli charges for them...

Make-up Brush Overview - Face Brushes

It's taken me awhile to put together my arsenal of make-up brushes and figure out what brushes work best, so I figured I'd do a few posts breaking down different brushes and what I use them for. Starting with face brushes:

Large Powder Brush
A large, fluffy brush is good for applying loose powder and, like I've mentioned before, is great for bronzer.

Blush Brush
The right sized blush brush can do double duty for blush and powder. You can try to use it for bronzer too, but a bigger brush will be better if you need to apply with a very light hand.

Stippling Brush
A duo fiber stippling brush can be used to apply cream blush or to blend in foundation.

Foundation Brush
Some people use their fingers to apply and blend their foundation, or you can use a traditional foundation brush. I love using a brush, plus it's less messy.

Concealer Brush
A small synthetic brush is made for concealer, but I also like fluffy brushes as I've mentioned before. I'll go into that in the next post.

If you're just starting out buying brushes, it can be overwhelming (and expensive). Start with cheaper brands like Sonia Kashuk or EcoTools to see which ones you actually use the most. Some you won't need to invest in, and some you'll find the cheaper versions work perfectly fine.

What I'm Loving...

Ok, who's happy there's a long weekend coming up? Everyone? I thought so.
Here's what I'm loving:

If you follow me on you probably know how much I love Twitter. Well, if that's not enough I've made it my mission to get all my friends and family on Twitter, too. I haven't told most of them to do it, so I guess it's a secret mission. Anyway. After my sister got her iPhone (trying to contain my jealousy about that) and she asked me what apps to get I said Twitter, so she finally joined! So follow Abby, Tweet her, and help her figure out Twitter :)

Chanel Mimosa
I've been waiting for the Chanel summer collection to come out for months, ever since I saw the preview images. Mostly so I could get my hands on Mimosa. I couldn't stand the wait so a couple of months ago I got a yellow China Glaze color but it wasn't cutting it. Mimosa is a shimmery, golden yellow with sparkle. And it's called Mimosa. How can you beat that? You can't.

Madras Shorts
It seems like every summer you see madras everywhere - dresses, shorts, hats. Well this summer I'm jumping on the bandwagon with these shorts, Paired with J. Crew t-shirts and sandals or wedges I think they're going to be extremely cute.

My sister is moving to Nashville so this weekend we'll be apartment hunting for her. I've been to Nashville a few times and I'm happy she'll be significantly closer to Birmingham than she is now :) Is anyone in the Nashville area? If you have apartments recs, websites, anything that would be helpful pass it on!

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

What I'm Wearing...

Shirt - J. Crew, Shorts - Old Navy, Shoes - American Eagle, Sunglasses - Ray-Ban, Earrings - c/o Towne & Reese, Watch - Michael Kors, Ring - House of Harlow, Bracelets - Melinda Maria, Nails - Sally Hansen Salon Effects in Frock Star
I bought these shorts (I really dislike the Bermuda shorts name, could be why they've gone unworn...) a couple of years ago and never wore them. My short shorts days were gone, and there really aren't many alternatives except going to the Bermuda length. But they looked so... wrong. I tried to style them a couple of times, got frustrated, and banished them to a drawer to be forgotten. They would have gone unworn for another summer until I saw how Vahni styled hers. Heels! I was having a pretty casual day so I went with wedges, but it's the same idea - don't wear them with flats! Of course now I feel obsessed to come up with a way to make these look good with flats, so we'll see how that story ends...
The pop of coral in the earrings and the madras print on the wedges definitely made the outfit feel more summery. I'm obsessed with the Towne & Reese jewelry they sent over and I know a lot of you are, too. Check in tomorrow for more.

Friend Friday - Blog Pet Peeves

Friend Friday
The Fashion Beauty Friend Friday group was created by Katy over at Modly ChicEvery week Katy puts together a set of questions and on Friday if you want to participate, you answer them on your blog and link back up at Modly Chic
List the 5 things that drive you crazy about blogs you visit.
1. Word Verification - Do I even have to elaborate? I hate it. You hate it. Everyone hates it. Get rid of it.
2. Not Being Easy To Contact - Your e-mail should be easily visible on your blog or better yet, attached to your comments. You need Twitter. A Facebook page is great for connecting. You shouldn't be hard to find when you're a blogger!
3. Loud Auto-Playing Music - Music on a blog doesn't necessarily bother me, but loud music does. I know that usually can be controlled by the volume of your speakers so that mainly leaves the auto part. Why not leave your music player but not have it automatically play when someone visits your site?
4. Simple Spelling Errors - If a quick spell check would have fixed it, it's annoying. Also not knowing the difference in your and you're, or there, their and they're - annoying.
5. Pilfering Content - Sometimes it's next to impossible to say exactly where your outfit or post inspiration came from. (Like if you're wearing jeans, or write a post on red nail polish - pretty impossible to say "Hey! Here's where I got that original idea!") So while it can be difficult, there are plenty of times when you do know where you got the idea, and you should give credit. If it's a gray area, do the right thing and give credit. If you have no idea where something came from, be up front about that as well and willing to change that if someone steps forward to let you know where the idea, picture, etc. did come from. It's not that hard.

This week's FBFF was inspired by Beautifully Invisible's 10 Things That Drive Me Crazy About Your Blog post. You definitely need to read it :)

If you're interested in FBFF, go to Modly Chic for more information then e-mail Katy if you want to join the group.

May 19, 2011

I've gotten numerous comments on my outfit posts about the variety of flats I own. When I did 30 for 30 and picked 3 different pairs (that you no doubt got sick of seeing), I got even more comments and a couple of requests to show some of my flats - so here you go. (I thought pictures of every single pair would be boring, so this is more of an overview of some favorites.)
I keep mostly flats in this shoe organizer that hangs in the closet. This isn't all of them, but it's the bulk of them.
My Tory Burch Revas are my hands down favorites. Love them, am obsessed with them, have absolutely no doubt I'll buy tons more. I've had both of these for over 2 years and they've been worn A LOT and are both absolutely fine. Completely worth the money.
These are all from Gap. The red patent d'orsays and the leopard prints you probably remember from 30 for 30.
Blue Express lace up flats, BCBG gray rosettes (also from 30 for 30), and pink studded Steve Maddens. Clearly this is a type of shoe I like to have a little fun with. Why not, right?

Ballet flats probably rival heels for my most pairs in my shoe collection. Not surprising considering how much wear you can get out of them. Of course now that it's hot out, I've broken out the flat sandals - but that would be a different post :)

What kind of shoes do you wear the most?

What I'm Loving...

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for summer. Anyone have anything fun planned yet? I'm hoping for some vacations, days at the lake, and we have to help 2 of our siblings move. By "we" I mean Jared has to lift furniture. I feel tired thinking about it. I think I need a nap now.
Here's what I'm loving:

Bath & Body Works Orange Sapphire
Has it become obvious from recent What I'm Loving... posts that there's been some Bath & Body Works sales? Well, recently there was buy 3, get 3 free, and I had a $10 off coupon. I'm not sure how that all works out but I think they paid me to get, like, 10 bottles of stuff. That's how it worked in my mind anyway. I don't think I've picked up any actual bath products at Bath & Body Works in the last couple of years because I didn't recognize hardly any of the scents, including Orange Sapphire. Why didn't anyone tell me about this?! It's amazing and perfect for summer.

Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Pure
I picked up the Sparklicity Pure from Sephora during Chic Week. I'd held off on buying it because I was afraid it was more of a glitter, but it's definitely not. It's a shimmer so it can be used multiple ways - on the brow bone, on tops of the cheek bones, on the cupid's bow, on top of your lip gloss - yeah. Multiple ways. And it's gorgeous. It has enough sparkle that I'm not sure it'd be great for everyday wear, but any other time? It's a go.

Inspiration Board
Having my inspiration board hanging in my closet has been more helpful than I could have imagined. Outfits and color combinations I like are right in front of me for reference while I'm picking out my clothes for the day. It also came in handy when I was figuring out what to pack for our vacation a few weeks ago. Why didn't I do this sooner?!

Melinda Maria Teeny Pod Bangle
When HauteLook had a Melinda Maria sales a few weeks ago I was just a little bit excited. Ok, I was a lot excited. When I saw there were Teeny Pod Bangles in a variety of colors (I've wanted some for months), I took it as a sign. And ordered 3. I got 2 in Blue Topaz and 1 in Ruby. I fully believe this was a good decision.

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

What I'm Wearing...

Shirt - Express, Cardigan - Express, Jeans - Old Navy, Shoes - Tory Burch, Earrings - Melinda Maria, Bracelet - Charming Charlie's, Ring - Express
Before it got sunny again, we had a cold, windy day in Gatlinburg (and this is the last of the vacation posts, just so you know). I wasn't expecting cold in May. It's confusing. You know what else is confusing? This new shirt from Express. I tried belting it, but that didn't seem right. I'm not loving the cardigan, but it was like 40 degrees. Suggestions are welcomed.
We picked the cold, windy day to ride the Sky Lift. This doesn't make sense now that I'm thinking about it, but whatever.
While you're riding up, you get your picture taken. Of course even though we knew it was going to happen, it looked hideous. Why can't they take 2 or 3 so you'll have a choice?! Gah. I gave Jared the camera on the way down so we could try to take our own:
You know why the Sky Lift takes your pictures on the way up? Because the view is better!
Lesson learned. I'll make Jared take our picture both times on our next Sky Lift adventure. Whenever that is.

Brush Holders

I did a little DIY recently and made some new brush holders, so I figured I'd show you the results:
*I'd like to point out that I totally made up the bed, which you can hardly see, for these pics and neglected to clean the crap off the dresser - which you can definitely see in the reflection of the mirror. And if you didn't see it before, you're looking now because I just pointed it out to you. Epic. Fail.

Calling this a DIY is pretty insulting to people who actually make things. This is more like a "buy 2 things at Michael's and make nothing" but that acronym isn't as fun. Anyway.
If you want to throw your makeup brushes in a coffee mug, have at it (I do it with my eyeliners, as you can see - but they're easier to pick out). There's nothing wrong with that. Except that they're all going to touch each other and you won't see them all. (Have I mentioned 10,000 times how I have to be able to see everything? I have to be able to see everything. There. I said it 10,001.)
So, here's the DIY - or B2TAMAMN. (I told you it wasn't as fun!) I'll try to make it look more complicated:
1. Drive to Michael's.
2. Get out of the car.
3. Go into Michael's.
4. Explain to husband 17 times why you're at Michael's.
5. Find 2 matching vases you like that will fit your brush collection.
6. Buy enough floral fill to fill up the vases.
7. Go to dinner.
8. Have a martini. (21 and over, please.).
9. Drive home. (Actually, the husband should drive. You just had a martini. Responsibility, people!).
10. Pour the floral fill into the vases & arrange your brushes.

Ta-da! That's a few more steps than I thought. I hope you're not overwhelmed. Go have the martini now if you are.

Friend Friday - Outside Influences

Friend Friday
The Fashion Beauty Friend Friday group was created by Katy over at Modly ChicEvery week Katy puts together a set of questions and on Friday if you want to participate, you answer them on your blog and link back up at Modly Chic
1. What magazines do you subscribe to?
Vanity Fair, Glamour, Marie Claire, InStyle, Allure, Harper's Bazaar, Elle and Vogue. And that's the order I read them in :)
2. Do you watch any fashion TV shows?
Project Runway. The Rachel Zoe Project.
3. Beyond blogs, what websites do you frequent for fashion inspiration?
It really depends. When I see something I like, I look it up, then that website usually leads me to another, and it continues. WeHeartIt and Pinterest are big inspiration sources lately, although I'm just getting into Pinterest.
4. Advertisements play a huge role in forming public opinion about a product or brand… what ads do you like and why?
I've always loved the Apple ads that used songs that weren't mainstream. Pretty clever for a lot of reasons - and I usually loved the song.
5. Do you own any fashion books?
Of course. All the Sex & the City books, the Chanel one I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Rachel Zoe's book, a couple of InStyle books, the Who What Wear book and plenty more I'm sure I'm forgetting.

If you're interested in FBFF, go to Modly Chic for more information then e-mail Katy if you want to join the group.

What I'm Wearing...

Top - Banana Republic, Cardigan - Gap, Jeans - Old Navy, Shoes - Cynthia Vincent for Target, Ring - c/o Shop the Look, Earrings - Express, Bracelets - Chan Luu, Nail polish - OPI Y'all Come Back Ya Hear?
Well, it rained one day during our vacation, on Jared's birthday. Never fear - there's an outlet mall in Pigeon Forge (right next to Gatlinburg). Jared was SO HAPPY to spend his birthday shopping. (Actually he bought 4 shirts, which is about 3 years worth of shopping for Jared. Sounds like he was happy to me. Of course I usually opt to spend my birthday shopping, so what do I know?) Skip to a couple of days later and the weather was back to being gorgeous, and we decided to go up in the mountains.
UP in the mountains.

Hiking up a mountain with pneumonia. This should end well.
Yeah, to get to the top of Clingman's Dome you had to hike. Not the best plan.

Glad the view is amazing, since I'm relatively sure I'm going to die here. (@ Clingmans Dome)
What? I did think that. But we made it:
And the view is amazing:

Hiking in sandals with no water and pneumonia is the dumbest thing I've ever done.
...and I still stand by that statement. Jared says he's having me a shirt made that says "I hiked to Clingman's Dome" and on the back it'll say "...with pneumonia". Don't worry. I'll totally post pics if that shirt ever gets here.
