Road Trip

This week we'll be in Savannah, GA, Charleston, SC, and Atlanta, GA. I don't remember having a road trip type vacation involving several cities and states since I was about 14, so I'm pretty excited. Have you ever been to any of these places? What do you recommend?

Friend Friday - Outfit Planning

 Friend Friday
The Fashion Beauty Friend Friday group was created by Katy over at Modly Chic. Each week there is a theme or a set of questions and on Friday if you want to participate, you make a post on your blog and link back up at Modly Chic

This week we're talking about outfit planning.

1. How do you go about picking your outfit for the day? (Do you lay stuff out the night before? Do you plan a whole week's worth of looks Sunday night? Do you wing it every morning?)
I only plan an outfit in advance if it's for an event like a wedding or something. Otherwise, I usually pick one thing I'm drawn to (sometimes it's a piece of clothing, sometimes it's a pair of shoes, a lot of times it's an accessory) then build from there.
2. Do you try stuff on and then take pics to see how it looks, like Cher in Clueless?
I only take pics if they're going on the blog. And obviously that's nowhere near an everyday thing.
3. And are you consistent in your planning or lack thereof, or is your planning limited to special events?
Definitely just special events. As much as I love to plan things and make lists I can't do that with outfits. Well, I guess I could. I just don't want to.
4. Do you have a way of keeping track of which outfits you wore when?
I've been asked this before. I rely on the blog a lot to see exactly how I wore something. Other than that, it's just my memory. I tie places and events to what I was wearing. Meaning when I think back to a birthday or a first day of school or my bridal tea or whatever, I remember exactly what I wore.
5. How do you come up with new clothing combinations? (An app? Computer program? Trial and error?)
Trial and error and my inspiration board in my closet. The point of the inspiration board has never been that those are things I want to buy, it's always a color combination or a way I hadn't thought of wearing something or a specific way I want to try and wear an outfit.

If you're interested in FBFF, go to Modly Chic for more information then e-mail Katy if you want to join the group.

What I'm Wearing...

Dress - Express, Leggings - Express, Shoes - Dolce Vita, Earrings - Melinda Maria, Ring - House of Harlow, Bracelets - House of Harlow and Express, Sunglasses - Chanel

After finishing the planting on Sunday, Jared and I cleaned up and had a date night. Not that you can see, but the new Dolce Vita's are wedges which means I can actually walk fine in them. Success. I just need to always keep that in mind when shoe shopping...

Travel Tips

We're getting ready to head out on a vacation next week, and I've been counting the days. I've done a couple of posts before on a few of my own traveling tips, but I wanted to try something different today. What are your best travel tips? Road trips, airports, packing - all of it!

Rebecca Minkoff MAC Mini

My main purchase from Shopbop last week was the Rebecca Minkoff Neon Lizard Mini MAC bag. I've been wanting a Rebecca Minkoff MAC bag for awhile and the Shopbop sale + gift card I won was the perfect excuse to buy one. I didn't know if I'd want a regular size one or mini, but Twitter recommendations let me know the mini should be fine. You can wear it cross body style, or detach the strap and carry it as a clutch. I can't wait to get some use out of it!

What's the last purchase you were excited about?

Gardening is expensive...

Well, it took several weekends but I think the yard and garden are done. Straw is in all the beds, front and back, day lilies and irises were added to some beds, hibiscus and canna were planted down the fence, and of course the steps and raised bed were built. Obviously I had very little to do with most of that. I was able to handle the planting of the herbs and veggies though:

Herb garden - mint, basil, rosemary and thyme

Raised bed - mint, watermelon, 4 kinds of bell pepper, 2 kinds of sweet peppers, eggplant, okra, 3 kinds of tomatoes and cucumber

I'm glad it's all finally done. And we only need to grow about $400 worth of stuff to break even.

You know there's no need to hide away...

When you're on your own
I'll send you a sign
Just so you know
I am me, the universe and you

This is the acoustic version of Universe & U, which if possible, I think I'm more obsessed with than the original. It's a hard call, though. Let's not over think it and just listen to this. Repeatedly. Ok fine, but it's what I'm going to do...

Layers & Layers

This is what happens when I have too much time to look at Shopbop. I start wanting 293479 different things. It's a good thing I won Dawn's Shopbop giveaway and they had the 20% off sale this week:

Magazines and retail sites like to call layering bracelets a trend. I call it something I started doing when I was 4, and I'm not giving it up anytime soon. I'm all too happy to leave the house with 50 accessories piled on, so it works for me :)

What I'm Loving...

It's over a week until we head out for our Savannah/Charleston trip, but I'm counting the days. Guess this means I need a vacation? Let's go with that.
Here's what I'm loving:

Flowerbomb Rollerball
I love this scent so much I picked up the rollerball version at Sephora a couple of weeks ago so I could throw it in my purse. I'm not big on touching up makeup during the day, so I've definitely never bothered with perfume, but this is just too easy. Plus it smells so good.

Water For Elephants
Yet another I read the book now I have a good excuse to see the movie. Yeah, I'm several years behind on books and movies. It's a process.

Zoya Maisie
This is still the only Zoya fleck effect I have, and it's pretty perfect. I've used it multiple times and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. It looks gorgeous over blue and green toned polishes that pick up the colors, and always stands out great against darker colors.

The Weepies - The World Spins Madly On
I thought of you and where you'd gone
And the world spins madly on.
Couldn't 'the world spins madly on' pretty much be an everyday motto? I think so.

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

Makeup Removers

Since getting my Clarisonic, I've made a point to remove my makeup at night then use a cleanser with the Clarisonic. Do I do this every night? Of course not. No matter what, you need to try and not sleep with makeup on, though. (Do I do this every night? Of course not.) Anyway, there are 2 makeup removers that are my favorites:

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleaning Towelettes
I've done a post on makeup remover wipes before. Basically, it doesn't get any easier than this. One wipe cleans your entire face, eye makeup included. You can find them at all price points, but just get a drugstore one with a scent you like. These don't even really have a scent, so all the better if you ask me.

Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleaning Oil
Ok first off, I wouldn't call this an oil. I guess it is, but the consistency just isn't what comes to mind when I think of oil. Anyway, I put about half a pump of this on a cotton round then wet it so that it's saturated, and it does the same as the makeup remover wipes. Except it's a half a pump. On a cotton round. And it cleans your whole face. That's amazing to me. I love this and I love how my skin feels, and I'd love it even more if there was a drugstore dupe I could recommend but I don't know of one. Sometimes you just have to pay more.

What do you use to remove your makeup at night?

Spring & Summer = Shorts

all images via Shopbop

Ok, so most of these are ridiculously short and I couldn't wear them in a million years, but still. All it took was buying a pair of cut offs a few weeks ago and I can't stop looking at shorts now.
Anyone else ready for summer?

April 13, 2012

I'm finding I'm falling in love with the dark over here...

And I used to talk
With honest conviction
Of how I predicted my world
I'm gonna leave it to to star gazers
Tell me what your telescope says

After hearing this on Pandora twice, and stopping what I was doing both time to listen to the song, I caved and bought it on iTunes. Actually I bought the whole album, which is amazing. Like all songs I'm obsessed with, I've had this on repeat for the past few days. On the laptop, the iPod, the car - everywhere. I love the simple melody and the gorgeous lyrics. The only question is why I hadn't ever heard this until recently.

April 12, 2012

What I'm Wearing...

Dress - Loft, Cardigan - Gap, Shoes - Dr. Scholl's, Necklace - American Eagle
Nail polish - Essie To Buy Or Not To Buy (purple), OPI Pedal Faster Suzi! (pink)

This is what I wore for Easter Sunday. I guess traditionally Easter means you can break out your white clothes again (if you go by rules - I don't) but I think Easter means you can wear a bunch of bright colors and no one can judge you.
It means other stuff too, obviously.
I wanted to do the 2 colors/opposite hands mani that I've seen on a couple of blogs and YouTube lately. Then I managed to cover up several of my fingers, so it probably loses some of the effect, but you'll have to trust that it worked out. Plus the pastel colors are good for Spring/Easter/using new colors I bought recently, right? Right.

What I'm Loving...

Everything is starting to get busier and I love that. Upcoming vacations, weddings, birthdays - the weekends are full, but that's fine with me. At least when it's busy with these kinds of things!
Here's what I'm loving:

Essie To Buy Or Not To Buy
You'll see this in tomorrow's post, but it goes in today because I'm obsessed with it. This is the only color I picked up from Essie's spring line and I hesitated because, well, it's a pastel purple. Not really groundbreaking. The subtle shimmer and sparkle in this make it different from any other remotely similar color I have, though. Huge difference? No. One I love? Absolutely.

One Day
I read the book first, then saw the movie and I'd recommend doing it that way. I loved the book but the movie leaves out some things and I think I would have been disappointed in it had I not read the book first. If you've read the book, you can fill in any holes in the movie and you'll probably like it better. I know I did. The concept of spanning 20 years by looking at the same day each year is interesting, and you manage to get plenty of information to know what's been going on in the main characters lives.

If you follow me on Instagram, or read the blog on Monday, you know over the weekend Jared and his brother built a raised bed for the backyard. In the past we've grown tomatoes, peppers, and different herbs in the summer. Now we have room to try a few more things, which is exciting. Any suggestions on what we should (attempt t0) grow?

Gotye - Somebody I Used To Know
Ok, this is everywhere. It's a Gotye song, it was done on The Voice, this week it's on Glee (which is the one I posted) - now I'm just waiting for someone to sing it on American Idol. I wasn't crazy about it at first, but now it's grown on me and since it's quickly becoming overexposed I might hate it soon so I might as well keep listening to it now.

Ok, so that's What I'm Loving right now! What about you?

Chic Week Part 2

Since Chic Week (15% off) was still going on at Sephora and I had a gift card, I decided I needed a couple more things:

Too Faced Natural Eye Neutral Eye Shadow Collection
One of those things I've looked at forever and have never bought. I don't love the packaging on these Too Faced palettes (too bulky), but the quality makes up for it.

BeneFit They're Real! Mascara
I'd been wanting to try this, so I bought the smaller size. Because...

Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash
I re-purchased my beloved Smoky Lash. I'm careful not to have too many mascaras at one time since you need to toss them after 6 months, which is why I went with the smaller BeneFit one.

Now I'm really done. For awhile, at least.

Mini Reese eggs are dangerous...

How was your Easter weekend? (Or weekend if you don't celebrate anything.)

All day Saturday, Jared and his brother worked on this. The pavers, the stairs, the raised bed - all built on Saturday. Since I can't begin to lift 250 lb railroad ties and no one in their right mind would let me near a chainsaw, I supervised. This means I said where the pavers should go, agreed that a 5th step was necessary, and went to get chips for lunch. Basically - I did nothing.

After church and Easter lunch on Sunday I did help Jared spread out the 20 bales of straw over the hill in the backyard and the 2 beds in the front yard. What exactly do you need for this kind of yard work? If you're me, Pandora on the iPad and pink gardening gloves. Extra points if you can spy August hiding.

And that brings me back to the candy. I bought no Easter candy. None. Then on Saturday, Jared bought a bag of those mini Reese eggs. Then on Sunday the rest of that first picture came into the house. All bets are off at this point. Anyone want some chocolate?

How was your weekend?

April 6, 2012

I joined Jewelmint months ago, but had never made a purchase until a few weeks ago. The Star Bound Ring grabbed my attention this month, so I decided to take the plunge. Plus, I had a 70% off code, so why not?

I'd say the quality is slightly better than what you'd find at Express, or a similar store. I love the ring, and it's perfectly good quality, but not worth $30 in my opinion. With 70% off, it was $7.99 - it's absolutely worth that. If I get another discount code and see a piece I love, I'd definitely get something else from Jewelmint. Otherwise, I'll be skipping each month.

But I am pretty obsessed with this ring :)

11 Things Tag

Last week Danielle tagged me in the Eleven Things post. Here are the rules:

1. Post these rules
2. Post a photo of yourself and 11 random things
3. Answer the questions set for you in the original post
4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them you’ve tagged them.

Figured I'd go old and random for the picture. This is in 2004 at Mallard Ball, a few months after we started dating. What's Mallard Ball? A sorority party where you dress in camo, basically. Only a sorority could have a party, make the theme to dress in camo, and then stick the word "ball" at the end.
11 Random Things:
1. I'm allergic to peanuts. For some reason, the peanut allergy is amusing to some people. By some people I mean Jared and my Dad. I do eat peanut butter, though, so obviously it's not that serious.
2. I can play the piano by ear. My Mom was a piano teacher and taught me when I was little and I used to ask her to play new pieces for me so I wouldn't have to learn how to read them. Once she figured out what I was doing she stopped playing them for me. She also warned my piano teacher about this when she stopped teaching me.
3. Math became my most hated subject in school after my awful 7th grade math teacher. I despised it through high school and dropped a math class in college because it was giving me panic attacks (I ended up having to take it anyway because I needed it for my degree).
4. My bedroom in high school had a celestial theme. One night in the middle of the night, I decided I wanted gold stars all over the walls, so I stenciled and painted them with gold paint. My Dad was not amused by this.
5. When I drove my Explorer, I got in 3 wrecks and got 3 speeding tickets. I've never been in another wreck and have only had 1 other ticket. I think the car was cursed.
6. I can't leave the house without going back and making sure I've turned off and unplugged my hair straightener. I even bought one that will automatically turn itself off, but I still have to go back and check.
7. I have to mute the television during ASPCA commercials or I'll burst into tears. I can't name one movie that will make me cry, but an ASPCA commercial will do it every time.
8. If I watch a TV show I almost always will watch every single episode, from the pilot until it goes off the air. If a show is off for a long time, I'll go back and watch all the episodes before it comes back. Jared and I did this with Mad Men this season and we used to do it with Lost. FYI, I got really depressed watching so much Lost in a short span of time. It's still one of my all-time favorite shows, though.
9. I have bad reactions to anesthesia and prescription pain medicine. Anesthesia makes me sick and when I'm coming out of it, I'm really upset and sad about random things. After the first eye surgery I kept telling Jared that the nurses in recovery didn't like me. Prescription pain pills just make me feel weird. There was one night after one of the eye surgeries where I kept trying to convince Jared that August was being mean to me. I was completely serious.
10. I'd love to have the time and money to travel all across the world, but since that's not in the cards right now, we try to take a couple of trips a year to cities in the US we've never been to before. If it works out, this year will be Savannah, GA  and Charleston, SC in May, then San Francisco in August.
11. I find it really hard, and kind of weird, to talk about myself. That's probably why I blog about outfits and makeup and nail polish. It's easy to focus on superficial things. It doesn't sound good when I say it like that, does it?

Questions Answered:

1. Are you a recipe follower or an inventor when cooking?
I think it's pretty well established at this point that I rarely cook. When I do, I'm a recipe follower, though. I have no confidence that I could come up with something better then something that's been printed.
2. What is your greatest fear?
Petty fear - spiders and most other bugs. I'll scream and wake Jared up in the middle of the night if I see one, and I nearly made my Mom have an accident in Nashville last May when a cicada got in the car. Serious fear - when I was diagnosed with MS, I had all kinds of horrible misconceptions about it. I still have to remind myself a lot that I was wrong, so I guess that means my fear is that I'll let MS control my life and my thoughts in ways that it shouldn't. I doubt this makes a lot of sense, but it would take forever to try and explain it better.
3. What was the worst movie you have ever seen?
I think I tried to watch Gigli when it came on TV because it had gotten so much flack for being the worst movie of all time. I can't remember a single thing about it though, so I don't know if that confirms or denies the worst movie ever speculation.
4. Do you dye your greys or pluck them? If you don’t have any…lie to me and say you do.
I've been dyeing my hair since I was 17. First it was box dye to fix an unfortunate Sun In incident that left me with slightly orange hair. When I was 18 I started getting professional hi-lites, but stopped that at 22 when I had gotten so blonde my hair was starting to feel like straw. I then went really red, then back to brown around the time I got engaged, keeping that through the wedding. Red again briefly, then just stuck with brown and now I'm back to the hi-lites again for the last year or so.
5. What makes you happier on a sad day?
A bubble bath, a glass of wine, listening to music, reading my magazines or a good book, going for a drive.
6. Post the last pic you took on your phone.
Already showed it on the blog, but the before and after picture of our patio.
7. Have you ever won anything? What was it?
I've won a few blog giveaways! A Shopbop giveaway, a book, a pair of earrings, a bracelet, a Foley & Corinna purse - good stuff :)
8. What is one goal you have for this year?
I'm kind of superstitious. I feel like if I say it, it won't happen.
9. Favorite song lyric?
Compare where you are to where you want to be, and you'll get nowhere.
- "Uncharted" Sara Bareilles
10. Do you have a habit you wish you could break? What is it?
Is worrying a habit? If it is, I wish I could do that less. If not, it'd be nice to cut back on the OCD thing of checking that my hair straightener is off, the doors are locked, I put the cap back on the nail polish tight enough, my keys are in my purse, etc, etc, etc... Well, I guess that kind of goes back to the worrying, anyway.
11. What movie can’t you turn off? The one that comes on and sucks you in every time.
As dumb as it is, it's usually one I already own like The Break Up or Top Gun.

My Questions:
1. What's your zodiac sign? Do you fit the characteristic and traits of it?
2. What city would you most like to travel to that you've never been to?
3. Have you ever broken a bone? Which one(s)?
4. What's one thing most people don't know about you?
5. What's the last movie you saw in the theater?
6. What do you order at a coffee place?
7. Can you whistle?
8. What's the most impulsive thing you've ever done?
9. If you could pick 3 different things to eat for the rest of your life, what would they be?
10. Who is your hero?
11. If you wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?

And here's who I'm tagging:
Carrie from This Free Bird
Amanda from A.Co Est. 1984
Caitlin from Candyfloss & Persie
Lena from A Crimson Kiss

Sephora Chic Week

If you're a VIB through April 6 on Sephora, if you enter the code CHICWEEK you'll get 15% off your purchase. Sephora basically has 2 times a year to get discounts - this, and Friends and Family in November. So, it's a good time to shop! Here's what I'm picking up:

Boscia B.B. Cream
I've been curious to try a BB cream. Sephora has several and after checking out all the reviews this is the one I'm going with.

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder
I wanted to try a new bronzer, and it was between this and Benefit Hoola. This won :)
Anastasia Brow Wiz
I don't have a brow pencil right now, so I'm looking forward to trying this.

Dior DiorShow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum & Primer
This is a splurge, but I love it so it's a great time to pick it up.

I also still want a good nighttime moisturizer - any recommendations on one I can pick up at Sephora?
Have you picked up anything at Sephora yet?
